In most environments, this steel resists atmospheric corrosion significantly better than carbon steel with or without copper addition. Bridges and other structures requiring enhanced corrosion resistance and high strength should use ASTM A847. For many applications, A847 can be used unpainted when properly designed and exposed to the atmosphere.
